How it is calculated

  1. Healthy range: the weight at which your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 – how the WHO defines normal weight in adults. Example: 1.70 m gives 54 to 72 kg.
  2. Broca: normal weight = height in cm − 100, “ideal weight” = normal weight − 10 % for men and − 15 % for women.
  3. Devine (1974): men 50 kg, women 45.5 kg, plus 2.3 kg per inch (2.54 cm) above 1.52 m. Robinson (1983): men 52 kg plus 1.9 kg, women 49 kg plus 1.7 kg per inch. Both come from drug dosing.

What the value does not show

  • There is no single “ideal” weight. What is right depends on muscle, build, age and health.
  • Devine and Robinson were developed for drug dosing, not as a health or beauty goal.
  • Children, teenagers and pregnancy need different standards.
  • Waist size and fitness often say more about health than weight alone.
