Your BMI. Put in context.
Enter your height and weight: you see your body mass index, the World Health Organization category and the healthy weight range for your height. For adults, not a diagnosis.
Guidance for healthy adults, not medical advice.
How it is calculated
- BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in m)². Example: 72 kg at 1.70 m gives 72 ÷ 2.89 = 24.9.
- WHO categories for adults: below 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to under 25 healthy weight, 25 to under 30 overweight, 30 and above obesity in three classes (from 30, 35 and 40).
- Healthy weight for your height: the range from BMI 18.5 to 24.9, converted into kilograms.
What the value does not show
- Muscle weighs more than fat. People who train a lot often have a higher BMI without carrying excess fat.
- BMI does not show where fat sits. Waist circumference says more about health risk.
- Children and teenagers are assessed with percentiles for age and sex; pregnancy uses other standards.
- In later life a slightly higher BMI is often considered favourable. The WHO limits are a rough guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good BMI?
For adults the WHO considers a BMI from 18.5 to under 25 a healthy weight. Your trend, waist circumference and how fit you feel say more than a single number.
Is BMI the same for women and men?
Yes, the WHO categories are the same for adults. At the same BMI, women have slightly more body fat on average.
Why is there no result under 18?
For children and teenagers BMI is assessed with percentiles for age and sex. That belongs with a paediatrician.
How do I reach a healthy weight?
Slowly and without crash diets: a moderate calorie deficit, enough protein and movement. The calorie calculator gives you a transparent starting value.
